An easy to use Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) that has a powerful set of features.
Pros: eLab is a comprehensive Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) which has been designed with the goal of streamlining the entire process. This begins with a highly intuitive visual interface that will make the task of data collection and entry about lab samples, a quick and easy task (consider the wonderful task samples window). The Workflow model helps to enforce strict guidelines and best practices. It is also a vital cog in the overall process with process control, version management and Quality Control being part of the structure - build workflow charts to describe the order of execution of tasks. Management is easier because of this, and also because of the Management tools which include project and sample management features. The software provides immediate access to data that is needed on a daily basis by lab technicians. Powerful documentation and result reporting functions enable efficient collection, organization and storage of experimental and sample data and description manuals (and literature). It supports the latest protocols and industry standards enabling compliance and interoperability. Security is robust and has been made a primary focus, with sufficient authentication, encryption, fine grained access control (by function) and overall a multi-tiered security architecture.
Cons: Since it is geared toward a specific set of individuals the good looking interface is acceptable. However, information presentation can be improved, especially in the Worklist information window. The claims made by the manufacturer about a reduction in regulatory compliance burden is not justified, because this is unverifiable. The process will however be more streamlined and efficient because of the use of this tool. Some exporting and online connectivity (and sharing) features should have been part of the tool. Labs that are distributed over several locations cannot interoperate easily.
Overall: 4 stars. It is a useful tool with a good set of features. There are some minor limitations with the interface. The tool also lacks sufficient options for use in a multi-location lab setup.
